Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly boost productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
