New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural changes.
