At least thirteen individuals lose their lives and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national projects.
